TUSCANY - As rescue efforts continued in the listing wreck of the cruise ship Costa Concordia days after the luxury liner ran aground off the Italian coast, a comical figure has risen from the tragic circumstances in humiliated Captain Francesco Schettino. Under scrutiny in the wake of the accident, Schettino has been painted as a bumbling stooge and criticized for abandoning ship (he said he tripped and fell into a lifeboat), refusing to aid in the rescue (he protested that it was dark), and last being seen having drinks with a blonde passenger shortly before the off-course vessel struck shallow rocks.
